We're out of eggs
by: Joe Bruzzese, M.A.
Letting go of your preconceived ideas, foregone conclusions and what you thought was true leaves the door open for opportunity.
My eight-year-old daughter asked, "Daddy will you make me an egg sandwich?"
"We're out of eggs," I replied, remembering a conversation I had with my wife earlier in the week.
I made the sandwich, sans the egg, which amounts to an english muffin, ham and cheese.
Prior to dinner we made a grocery run to pick up eggs for the following morning's breakfast. Upon placing our newly purchased eggs in the fridge I noticed the two dozen that my wife had apparently purchased a few days prior.
Where were these eggs when I made my daughter's eggless sandwich just a few short hours ago?
Answer: in the same place they had always been, right in front of me; but blinded from my sight because of what I thought was true.
How many opportunities do you miss because of what you believed to be true about a situation?
Here's a few I observed in the past few days:
1. Stores are too crowded we will never find what we want.
2. Spending the holidays with in-laws is tough.
3. We tried that solution already.
4. Writing blogs is a long, arduous task.
And a few of the more subtle statements that lead to missed opportunities:
1. They always...
2. It wasn't like that before...
3. I would never...
Look for the eggs even when you think they might not be there.
